The reconstruction project of the New Riga Theatre has received the special recognition of “Highly Commended” from the international jury at the World Architecture Festival 2024 in Singapore. The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is the largest international awards ceremony and conference for architects and designers, which has been held since 2008. In 2024, the in-person ceremony took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 6 to 8 November. The reconstruction of the New Riga Theatre building ensemble was nominated for the award in the “Retrofit” category of completed buildings. The “Retrofit” category includes buildings and building ensembles that are rebuilt while maintaining the original function of the buildings. In total, WAF nominees are nominated in 4 main categories (completed projects, future projects, landscapes and interiors) and 44 subcategories. One main award and one special “Highly Commended” recognition are awarded in each category. In the “Retrofit” category, the New Riga Theatre reconstruction project received this recognition. The initial evaluation of the projects takes place anonymously and the authors are not allowed to reveal their identity. The second evaluation, on the other hand, takes place in person in Singapore, where the project is presented to the international jury. The projects nominated for the “Retrofit” category were evaluated in person by 3 representatives of the international jury: architect Kerstin Thompson from Australia, architect Gary Lawson from New Zealand, as well as publicist, editor of the “C20” magazine and director of the “Twentieth Century (C20) Society”, which advocates for the preservation of historical heritage in architecture, Catherine Croft from London (UK). How to build a house and how to build an event? How does the life drawing of Zaiga Gaile overlap with the surreal cinematic life of August Sukuts? In the sixth episode of the documentary series "Garainis", one of our greatest architects talks about her shared history with the man-event, the founder of the film festival "Arsenāls" August Sukuts. The stops on the joint journey are Ķīpsala, Ķeipene, "Andalusian Dog", shaping the future and caring for the past.
