ROCK HOUSE

The building was built on old foundations found in the ground, which marked a small rectangle on the edge of the Ballast Dam. There was a wooden building here, the idea of which was used as the basis for the concept of the new project – a captain’s house with a turret in Ķīpsala, on the banks of the Daugava River. The historical replica of the wooden building is part of the project’s facade – behind it is the brick part of the house, designed as an archetype of traditional folk architecture. The location and layout of the building take into account the 4-way map, orientation to the cardinal points, the path of the sun and the prevailing winds. The center of the house is marked by the intersection of 4 directional lines – an open fireplace space, built as an associative mantelpiece. The fireplace is placed on the main A-R axis, which begins with the entrance gate, threshold, entrance door, hallway, and exits through the large room into the courtyard through the garden door. The peculiarity of the house is the combination of two historical archetypes, a country homestead and a city house, into one, and it takes place in the third time period – the end of the 20th century.
