RECONSTRUCTION OF RUMENE BARN

The aim of the project is to start the process of rebuilding the large historical stone barn. The barn is located in the former stable yard, around which the manor's outbuildings are grouped - the stable, the carriage house and the servants' house. In previous years, all the aforementioned stone buildings have been restored and rebuilt: The stable has been rebuilt into five two-story apartments; The garden house, the former servants' house, has been rebuilt into four apartments; The carriage house has been rebuilt into a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, and a conference hall has been built on the second floor; The barn volume is a monumental stone building, the area of which on the ground floor is approximately 1400m2. The reconstruction project includes placing two functions in the main volume of the barn - guest apartments and social event halls for 200 guests with staff rooms. The apartments for receiving guests are located in the volume facing the stable yard, both on the ground floor and on the roof floor. The main entrance is planned in the central part of the volume from the barn yard. It is marked by a new pediment of boulder masonry, which protrudes from the facade plane by 1.2m. The associative pediment is transferred from the Stable volume. The barn yard in front of the pediment is a wide paved area where all the participants of the celebration can gather. The public event halls are located in the main longitudinal volume of the Barn, which is located perpendicular to the barn apartment volume. The total area of the event volume on the ground floor is 757m2. The main public event hall is located in the central part of the perpendicular longitudinal volume – the Orangery. It is a spacious and bright room where lunch can be served at round tables for 200 people at the same time, conferences, concerts and art exhibitions can be held. Wide gate openings have been created in the boulder masonry walls, which make it possible to open the hall to both sides – the southern and northern facades. On both sides of the facade, the hall is adjoined by spacious outdoor terrace decks, where guests can gather in good weather. There are benches with tables here, and the terraces are surrounded by green plantings. Depending on the weather conditions, you can use the terraces on one or the other side of the sky, or both together. The hall is designed to be open to the roof, which is supported by monumental wooden trusses, the roof is insulated. The roof truss has built-in balconies and skylight windows in the core of the building. RUMENE MANOR HOUSE

Rūmene Manor is a very old property, it appears on Livonian maps since the 16th century. The existing manor house was built at the end of the 19th century as a single-storey neo-Gothic building. Unfortunately, the original design of the manor has been lost. Neither the drawings of the architect Teodors Zeilers' manor nor the designs of the park by Georgs Kufalts have survived, so the belief that they created the manor ensemble is an assumption based on analogous designs. The reconstruction of the building cannot be considered an authentic restoration of the existing volumes. The object is not an architectural monument, and this gave an opportunity to look more freely at the architectural heritage, assessing it from today's criteria and lifestyle requirements. When expanding the building, we decided on an inconspicuous intervention. During the reconstruction, a basement was dug under the existing building and a second floor was built for the manor house. A new manor kitchen with a glazed spice garden above it was built in place of the low western extension of the building. On the lake side, the large outdoor neo-Renaissance-style stairs and terraces were restored in an authentic way, the lake was drained and excavated, the spacious park was cleaned up, and the reconstruction of the outbuildings began. The entrance portal and pergolas, bridges, and heart-shaped island were restored based on photographs. The goal of the restoration was not to restore the manor's former life, so the interior image of the manor house was created as a vision of the atmosphere that could once reign in a country manor. The interior layout of the manor house was arranged in accordance with the symmetrical facades of the building, adapting it to its modern lifestyle. The first floor and part of the basement are intended for relaxation and parties, and 5 residential apartments are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The interior is designed as one common bright and light-filled space, the equipment and collection of objects of which sensitively try to connect objects from different eras and styles. Everything in this house is covered with a light patina of time, and the built-in things and objects are real and handmade. The Rūmene Manor House project received the Latvian Union of Architects' Award in the Best Reconstruction nomination at the Latvian Architecture Show of 2008.
